Who we are...

Helmets On Inc/Grand Rapids BMX is a 501(c)(3) all volunteer organization that promotes youth fitness and cycling through bicycle motocross (BMX). We have just concluded our inaugural season on our newly-built hometown track.  The reception from the community this year was phenomenal. We averaged 50+ riders per race over 26 races, with spectators estimated at 100 or more during each race. Our attendance and rider count increased with each race. And we anticipate even bigger numbers for the 2009 racing season. We have riders aging from 4 years old to over 50. Riders race against his or her own age and proficiency. Our races are sanctioned by the National Bicycle League www.nbl.org. 

During the 2009 racing season we have some large races scheduled. In June we will be hosting a National Bicycle League Midwest Regional, which will bring in hundreds of riders and even more spectators from our surrounding states. And in August we also will be hosting a Michigan state qualifier which will attract riders from all over the state. Both of these races are 3 day events.  

Helmets On Inc. / GRBMX leased a 4.5 acre piece of property located in the heart of Grand Rapids. Our lease from the city is for 10 years. Constructing the track was an immense undertaking, utilizing hundreds of hours of volunteer time and solicitation of private donations.  No public funds were used to finance this endeavor. 

Our track offers inner-city kids an opportunity to gain confidence and sportsmanship through racing BMX.  Not only are they finding a healthy and fun way to spend their time, they are building relationships with their families and some mentoring relationships are evolving.  Races occur Tuesday evenings and practices are held on Thursday evenings from May – September.  

We are providing scholarships to kids who are unable to afford the race entry fees and yearly registration. We also offer ways for the kids to help out at the track to earn “track bucks” (essentially coupons that will have cash value at the BMX track and a local supporting bike shop).
